Superchargers are ideal for long distance travel and are designed to charge your Tesla vehicle quickly so you can get back on the road. For daily commutes or local driving needs, there are a variety of home charging options.

Charging speeds vary slightly by model.

Note: Roadsters do not currently have Supercharging capabilities.

To charge your Tesla vehicle with a Supercharger, you first need to open the charge port using your vehicle’s touchscreen or the Tesla app. You can also open the charge port by pressing the bottom of the charge port door while your vehicle is unlocked.

Plug the charging connector into your vehicle charge port. The charge port LED will flash green once charging has begun.

You can monitor your charging progress in the Tesla app. When you’re done charging, disconnect the charging cable by holding the button on the connector handle to release the latch and pulling the handle from the charge port. The charge port will automatically close. Once you unplug your vehicle, your payment will be processed directly from the payment method in the Tesla app.

If navigation is enabled, your vehicle will recommend the needed charge level to get to the next Supercharger on your route. To reduce congestion at high-use Superchargers, your vehicle’s charge limit may be automatically adjusted to 80%. You can manually increase the charge limit after plugging in by using the vehicle touchscreen or Tesla app.

Note: Charging speeds slow as the battery charges, so reaching 100% charge will typically take significantly longer than reaching 80%.

Yes. You can Supercharge a borrowed or rental vehicle just like you would if you were the vehicle owner. The Supercharging session will be charged to the payment method designated by the vehicle owner in the Tesla app, so make sure you are authorized to do so. Only the vehicle owner can add or change payment method.

If you are driving a Tesla vehicle, the interactive Trip Planner in your vehicle can help you locate a Supercharger site while you’re on the road. To enable Trip Planner, touch ‘Settings’ > ‘Navigation’ > ‘Trip Planner’ on your vehicle touchscreen.

Once you have selected a site, your vehicle’s navigation will automatically route you to the entrance of the property. You can then zoom in on the map to find the exact location of the station. Tap on the station’s red lightning bolt icon on your touchscreen if additional information is needed.

You can also enter your destination into the touchscreen map and Trip Planner will add Supercharger locations to your route as needed based on your current state of charge. Trip Planner is also available in the Tesla app.

If you own an EV made by another manufacturer, you can see available Superchargers by opening the Tesla app and tapping ‘Find a Charger’ or by using our interactive Find Us map. If a Supercharger site does not appear in the Tesla app or on the Find Us map, it may not currently be open to EVs made by other manufacturers. We continually monitor our Supercharging sites, and we’re actively working to open more locations over time. We recommend checking back periodically for the latest availability.

Supercharger stations are GPS located in the touchscreen navigation. Your vehicle’s navigation will route to the entrance and you can zoom in on the map to find the exact location of the station. If additional instructions are available, you can see them by tapping on the station’s red pin. Additional instructions may include a gate code, details on the parking level, peak hours and more.

Almost all Supercharger stations are open for charging 24 hours a day, although nearby amenities are subject to business hours.

If a Supercharger station does have limited hours, this will be displayed on the touchscreen when the site is selected.

You can help decide where our next Supercharger will be installed by casting a vote or suggesting a location. There is a new voting cycle every three months and you can cast up to five votes for proposed Supercharger sites. Additionally, you can suggest a new Supercharger site for the next voting cycle.

Note: By casting your vote, you agree that we may follow up and contact you regarding Supercharging.

Specific pricing for each Supercharger site is shown on the selected pin’s pop-up on your touchscreen. When your charging session is complete, an estimate of the final charges is shown on the screen.

All prices shown in the Tesla app for charging your vehicle include normal taxes and fees. Your choices during and after the charging session may incur additional fees such as congestion fees.

Prices may change from time to time.

Charging rate is determined by the plug-in time and does not adjust if pricing changes during the charging session. Certain Supercharger stations offer on-peak and off-peak rates. The rates and peak times are both displayed in the navigation application on the vehicle touchscreen.

To view your Supercharging invoices in the Tesla app, follow these steps:

1. Open the Tesla app.
2. Tap the menu in the top-right corner.
3. Tap ‘Charging.’
4. Tap ‘Charging History.’

You can also download Supercharging invoices by tapping the download icon in the top-right corner and providing the invoice date, vehicle and file type you’d like to receive.

Supercharger stations are priced differently across locations due to Tesla's dynamic pricing model, which adjusts rates in real-time based on site-specific factors like occupancy and forecasted demand to optimize utilization and manage congestion effectively. At a high level, the pricing algorithm per site evaluates real-time occupancy levels, distributes usage throughout the day, increases average site efficiency and balances network load.

Whenever possible, owners are billed per kWh (kilowatt-hour); in other areas, owners are billed per minute.

When billing per minute, there are four tiers to account for changes in charging speeds: ‘Tier 1,’ ‘Tier 2,’ ‘Tier 3’ and ‘Tier 4.’

We are also introducing Supercharger sites with live pricing where charging prices are based on occupancy rates. Learn more about live pricing and how it works.

Before using a Supercharger, you’ll need to add and designate a default payment method in the Tesla app. Supercharging payments will be automatically charged to your selected payment method.

Note: Supercharging payments for Tesla vehicles can only be made and managed through the Tesla app.

To add a Supercharging payment method to the Tesla app, follow these steps:

1. Open the Tesla app.
2. Tap the menu in the top-right corner.
3. Tap ‘Charging.’
4. Tap ‘Manage Payment’ > ‘Payment.’
5. Tap ‘Add Card,’ then enter the card information and tap ‘Save.’

You can have multiple payment methods in the Tesla app, but you will need to designate one of them as your Supercharging payment method before using a Supercharger.

To designate a payment method as your Supercharging payment method in the Tesla app, follow these steps:

1. Open the Tesla app.
2. Tap the menu in the top-right corner.
3. Tap ‘Charging.’
4. Tap ‘Manage Payment.’
5. Tap ‘Payment Method’ and select your payment method.

The following payment methods are supported:

• American Express
• Discover Card
• JCB
• MasterCard
• Visa
• Diners Card

You can update your Supercharging payment method and billing address in the Tesla app. However, there always needs to be a primary payment method on file to successfully purchase Supercharging.

To change your Supercharging payment method or billing address in the Tesla app, follow these steps:

1. Open the Tesla app.
2. Tap the menu in the top-right corner.
3. Tap ‘Charging.’
4. Tap ‘Manage Payment.’
   To change your payment method, tap ‘Payment Method,’ and update the information or select a new card.
   To change your billing address, tap ‘Billing Address,’ and update the information.

To remove your Supercharging payment method, follow these steps:

1. Open the Tesla app.
2. Tap the menu in the top-right corner.
3. Tap your name > ‘Wallet.’
4. Tap the payment method you would like to remove.
5. Tap ‘Remove.’

Note: You must have a payment method on file and selected in the Tesla app to successfully purchase Supercharging.

You can see if you have an unpaid balance in the Tesla app. If you have an unpaid balance, you will see a reminder that your Supercharging balance is due. To pay an unpaid Supercharging balance, follow these steps:

1. Open the Tesla app.
2. Tap the menu in the top-right corner.
3. Tap ‘Charging.’
4. Tap ‘Pay Now.’

Ensure your billing address and payment method are up to date before using a Supercharger. Unpaid balances or an incorrect payment method may prevent you from Supercharging.

Supercharger congestion fees are fleet-wide initiatives to ensure a frustration-free charging experience for all Tesla drivers. Superchargers are designed for fast charging and therefore, should only be used for as long as it takes to charge a vehicle.

Congestion fees accrue when a Supercharger site is busy and your vehicle's battery is already at or above the congestion fee level of 80% battery charge; or your charging session has ended. Fees are waived for the first five minutes, and then billed until the vehicle is moved.

The rate structure for each site can be found on the site’s pop-up in the vehicle touchscreen or in the Tesla app.

At certain Supercharger stations, the cost of Supercharging differs at different times of day. At these Supercharger stations, the cost of Supercharging during peak hours will be higher than during off-peak hours. Prices and peak times are both displayed in the navigation application on the vehicle touchscreen and in the Tesla app.

Certain Supercharger sites offer on-peak and off-peak pricing based on live Supercharger utilization rather than pre-defined estimations. When on-peak and off-peak pricing is billed based on live Supercharger utilization, the prices change depending on whether or not Superchargers are available. The prices do not change mid-session.

Note: Your Supercharging price is determined by the plug-in time and does not adjust if pricing changes during the charging session.

A Supercharging Membership allows other electric vehicles to Supercharge at the same price as Tesla vehicle owners.¹ This membership is designed for other EVs, not Tesla vehicles. You do not need a Supercharging Membership for your Tesla vehicle. However, if you own a Tesla vehicle and an EV made by another manufacturer, you will need a Supercharging Membership to Supercharge your other EV at the Tesla vehicle price.

Note: You do not need to purchase a membership for each vehicle.

To see if you have Supercharging credits, follow these steps:

1. Open the Tesla app.
2. Tap the menu in the top-right corner.
3. Tap ‘Charging.’

To check if you have free Supercharging, open the Tesla app and tap ‘Specs and Warranty.’

Note: Supercharging credits can only be used as a payment method for charging sessions of Tesla vehicles at Superchargers sites owned by Tesla.

You can only see if a vehicle has free Supercharging if you are the vehicle's registered owner or if you are added as a driver by the vehicle's registered owner in the Tesla app. If you are not the vehicle’s owner or a registered driver, we cannot provide that information.

You can find the expiration date of your Supercharging credits in the Tesla app. To check the expiration date, follow these steps:

1. Open the Tesla app.
2. Tap the menu in the top-right corner.
3. Tap ‘Charging.’

Once Supercharging credits expire, they will no longer show up in the Tesla app.

Standard Supercharger fees apply after free Supercharging credits are used.

Free Supercharging credits can only be used at Supercharger sites owned by Tesla. Free Supercharging credits cannot be used at Supercharger sites not owned by Tesla. Supercharging-related fees including congestion fees still apply.

If your Tesla vehicle has free Supercharging, you can charge at Supercharger sites owned by Tesla at no cost. If you charge your Tesla vehicle at a Supercharger site not owned by Tesla, you can view the price for each site before you begin your charging session. Supercharging payments are automatically processed from the payment method in the Tesla app. Supercharging-related fees including congestion fees still apply.

V3 Superchargers are capable of delivering peak charge rates up to 250 kW.

You can find the maximum kW available at each site on the site's pop-up card. Tap on the station’s red lightning bolt icon on your vehicle touchscreen or from the Tesla app for additional information.

No. Charging rates vary based on several factors such as size and age of battery pack, state of charge, ambient temperature conditions and vehicle configuration.

We opened our first V4 Supercharger location in Harderwijk, the Netherlands in March 2023 and we will continue to open more V4 sites. All V4 Superchargers are equipped with a longer cable, providing easy access for all EVs.

In North America, V4 Superchargers can charge up to 250 kW for Model S, Model 3, Model X and Model Y vehicles.

Cybertruck vehicles have the ability to charge up to 325 kW only at V4 Superchargers.

Before using a Supercharger, you must:

• Download the Tesla app
• Add a payment method in the Tesla app
• Designate a Supercharger payment method in the Tesla app
• Ensure a proper connection between the Supercharger and your vehicle

If you purchased your Tesla vehicle through a third party, you must be listed as the vehicle owner before you can manage Supercharging payments. Transferring vehicle ownership to your name only takes a few steps and will give you access to all of your vehicle’s features.

Your vehicle and Superchargers communicate to select the appropriate charging rate for your vehicle. Supercharging rates may vary due to battery charge level, battery temperature, current use of the Supercharger station and extreme climate conditions.

Your vehicle charges faster when the battery is at a lower state of charge; charging slows down as the battery fills up. Depending on your destination, fully charging your battery is often not necessary.

Superchargers are monitored closely and regularly serviced by our Tesla Service Technicians to address any technical issues as quickly as possible. If you identify a broken or inoperable Supercharger, use another Supercharger at the same location.

If you are experiencing an issue before or during a charging session at a Supercharger, you can report the issue from the Tesla app. To report an issue, follow these steps:

1. Open the Tesla app.
2. Select a location.
3. Find and select ‘Report an Issue.’
4. Select the category and include a photo.

Note: To access this feature, you must have Tesla app version 4.39.0 or later. Make sure you have the latest version of the app by updating the Tesla app on your mobile device.

Our team will review the issue and determine the next steps. Although our systems can detect issues that can affect charging performance, reports of onsite issues such as access, cleanliness or damage to charging stations will be investigated from the report.
