Overview

The Tesla Model S, Model X, Model 3, and Model Y are equipped with an event data recorder (EDR). The EDR records data related to vehicle dynamics and safety systems when the system senses a crash or a crash-like situation, such as hitting a road obstacle. This data is stored in the vehicle's Restraints Control Module (RCM).

The recorded data may help Tesla and other interested parties better understand the circumstances which lead to crashes and the potential for injury. Event data is recorded by your vehicle only when it senses a non-trivial physical occurrence; data is not recorded by the EDR under normal driving conditions.

Tesla provides free, publicly available software which may be used to access and retrieve EDR data and provides a free online service that generates a report in PDF format from the retrieved data.

This User Guide describes the steps necessary to access and retrieve EDR data and to generate a report.

Required Equipment

To access data from a Tesla EDR you will need the following hardware:

1. A Windows computer (other operating systems are not supported)
2. A PCAN-USB, which is a USB-to-CAN adapter manufactured by Peak System
3. The appropriate Tesla cable, available at Tesla Retrieval Cables by Crash Data Group. If you are having difficulty with the cables, contact the supplier directly.

You will also need the following software:

1. Device drivers for the PCAN-USB, available from Peak System
2. The Tesla EDR Retrieval Program, available at: Tesla EDR Retrieval Program

Software Installation

After downloading the Tesla EDR Retrieval Program, click on the executable file to launch the software installation wizard. After reading and agreeing to the license agreement you will be able to install the program and choose whether or not to create a desktop shortcut. The software is entirely free and does not require activation. However, it is recommended that you periodically check https://edr-eu.tesla.com

Data Retrieval

EDR Data can be retrieved from all Tesla Model S, Model X, Model 3 and Model Y vehicles. Tesla Roadster, which was produced from 2008 to 2012, is equipped with an RCM but does not have an EDR.

Report Service

Tesla provides a free online service at https://edr-eu.tesla.com where users can generate reports from retrieved EDR data files. These reports contain important information regarding data polarity, application limitations, and other data limitations that should be reviewed carefully by the user in the context of the facts of a given event.
